This past weekend was the annual Fall Brawl race at A Main Hobbies famous indoor track Outback Raceway! Team Extreme-Hobbies.com and Team Stumpman Racing’s driver Nathan Bernal made the trip from Sacramento, California to compete against some of Northern California’s best drivers. Nathan competed in both the most prestigious classes at the event, 2wd and 4wd modified buggy.
Friday, November 1st was open practice all day with a club race that night so driver could prepare themselves for the weekend under racing conditions. Bernal would only run his 2wd Team Associated B4.2 with C4.2 conversion kit at the club race, opting not to run 4wd. Locking in top qualifying position in Mod. 2wd at the club race, Bernal would lead almost the entire main event before making a mistake in the rhythm section with 4 laps remaining, allowing Justin Moon to take the win and placing Bernal second. Now it was Saturday and time to put on the game faces. First up was Modified 4wd buggy which Bernal had not even taken a practice lap in all day Friday. Nathan’s Team Associated Factory Team B44.2 was on rails with JConcepts Gold Bar Codes out of the box. Bernal would throw down a TQ run for round 1! Next up was Modified 2wd Buggy and much like the 4wd, Nathan had his car absolutely dialed. On TQ pace with under a minute remaining, Bernal would fall victim to lap traffic and end up with a 4th for the round. Round 2 of Modified 4wd buggy did not go as planned. Bernal would clip a pipe on the warm-up lap ending his chances at another TQ run. However, Bernal would recover and put in another TQ run in Round 3 after one of the best qualifying races of the weekend with Tyler Vik. Again in Round 2 of Modified 2wd buggy, Nathan would fall victim to lap traffic resulting in a top five run. After the resort for Round 3, Bernal was placed in the A qualifying group which meant he would be racing cars more his pace. Nathan was able to TQ round 3 in what was a great race with A Main team drivers Justin Moon and Tyler Vic. This would conclude Saturday’s qualifying and expectations where now very high for Sunday! Sunday kicked off with one more round of qualifying and then the main events. In Modified 4wd Bernal would end up second for the round giving Tyler Vic the overall TQ. Modified 2wd buggy TQ came down to the wire between Team C’s Justin Moon and Extreme-Hobbies.com driver Nathan Bernal. Bernal would manage to pull out a two second lead at the end of the run to put his Team Associated C4.2 at the front of the grid for the main event. The first main up was modified 4wd buggy and it was set to be a good race between the top three, Vic, Strange and Bernal. However, three laps into the race Bernal would make a slight bobble allowing Vic to stretch out a lead. Strange and Bernal would battle for the second spot for the remainder of the race with Bernal ending up third. The last race of the weekend was the most prestigious of all, the modified 2wd buggy! With a stacked 10 car main event, this 8 minute race had the walls stacked with spectators. When the start tone went off, all eyes were on the top three of Bernal, Moon and Vic. Moon would make what was an aggressive, but clean pass on the opening lap for the lead knowing that if Bernal stretched out a lead it would be over. Bernal would put the pressure back to Moon for the next lap forcing a mistake out of Moon and allowing Bernal to regain the lead. With Tyler Vic now in second, Bernal would put his head down and go mistake free for the remainder of the main event slowly stretching out his lead. Bernal would go on to a very well deserved and hard fought win in the Modified 2wd class! Nathan drove his www.Extreme-Hobbies.com / Stumpman Racing Team Associated C4.2 buggy on JConcepts Gold Bar Codes. He also used a Hobbywing V3.1 speed control in both his cars powered by Reedy batteries. Special thanks to Ron Schuur at Schuur Speed motors.
